The African Risk Capacity (ARC) has provided Madagascar with $10,7 million in financial assistance to address the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Batsirai. This follows as the tropical storm has triggered the country’s parametric tropical cyclone insurance coverage. The storm had been accompanied by increased wind speeds of 165 kilometres (km) per hour and gusts of up to 230 km per hour, in addition to rainfall that led to floodings and destruction of infrastructure. The storm has impacted homes, schools, health centres, and transport infrastructure in the Mananjary, Nosy Varika, and Manakara districts. The Malagasy National Disaster Management Agency has stated that 124,000 people have been affected by the cyclone, with at least 29,000 displaced and more than 120 deaths recorded. The ARC’s financial contribution is expected to assist the country’s authorities in restoration efforts and fund humanitarian efforts in vulnerable communities.
