The United States (US) Government has announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Somalian officials and other individuals on allegations of undermining the democratic process in the country. This follows the recent delay in the country’s parliamentary elections. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the sanctions aim to promote accountability for obstructionist actions. The restrictions follow after Somalian leaders extended the parliamentary elections until 15 March 2022, after failure to conclude the electoral process by 25 February 2022. Blinken has noted that the delay in the conclusion of the country’s elections is affecting political stability, security efforts, and economic development.
