Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen held discussions with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan. During the meeting, the two officials discussed the Somalian elections, the reform process of the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and efforts to address and eradicate acts of terrorism by the al-Shabaab group in Somalia. Mekonnen has stated that increased cooperation is necessary to prevent al-Shabaab’s attempts to destabilise the region.
