The United Nations (UN) Humanitarian Agency has released $25 million to provide emergency assistance to vulnerable communities affected by the ongoing drought in Somalia. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, has stated that the funding from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) is expected to be utilised to supply relief food aid and water in remote areas of Jubbaland and Puntland. The allocation comes in addition to the $17 million recently provided from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to meet the immediate needs of communities affected by drought. The UN estimates that more than 4,3 million people are in urgent need of food and water assistance, with over 500,000 Somalians displaced by the situation.
