The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Somalia has announced that Somalia’s drought situation is significantly escalating following three failed rainfall seasons. The deterioration of the drought has led to an estimated 245,000 people being displaced after fleeing their homes. NRC Country Director Mohamed Abdi has stated that these statistics are expected to increase to approximately 1,4 million additional displaced people due to water and food shortages. NRC’s humanitarian staff across the country are reporting increasing numbers of deceased livestock, malnourished children, drought-related deaths, and vulnerable groups in need of aid. The NRC has stated that humanitarian efforts are underway.
