The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) has initiated efforts to recover an estimated R8 billion in outstanding funds for the supply of water to various provincial departments in Bloemfontein. The MMM has stated that water supply to the province’s Government headquarters, the OR Tambo House, which houses the Office of the Premier, has been restricted due to R1 billion in outstanding debt. This follows after the Metro’s power utility, Centlec, recently cancelled plans to suspend power supply at Government buildings due to successful negotiations. The provincial Government reportedly agreed to pay R90 million monthly in order to settle the R200 million in outstanding debt. Water supply to the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (PACOFS), together with the Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport, have also been disconnected due to non-payment.
