SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – JOHANNESBURG – ANNOUNCEMENT 01 MAR 2022 (14:30)

Eskom announced that the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) owes the utility company R544-million. The electricity debt owed to Eskom by Gauteng municipalities continues to increase as more fail to service their Eskom accounts. However, on 18 February 2022, the city paid a partial amount of R530-million. This amount is a portion of its bulk accounts, which amount to a total of R1,074-billion. The amount of R544-million remains outstanding, and Eskom expects the city to pay the overdue amount. Eskom warned that failure to pay the overdue amount is in breach of the electricity supply agreement between Eskom and the city.
