The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has called on several labour unions, including the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), to join the strike at Clover. Members affiliated with the General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) and the Food Allied Workers Union (FAWU) have held protests against the planned retrenchment and salary reductions. SAFTU General-Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has stated that the restructuring will result in the closure of several factories, retrenchment of workers and wage cuts of 20%. Meanwhile, SAFTU is also set to hold a national day of action on 25 January 2022.
