The South African Police Service (SAPS) is expected to train 10,000 of its members to be first responders in an event similar to the July 2021 civil unrest. Police Minister Bheki Cele stated that the Department is training Police near hotspots to be first responders while waiting for Public Order Policing (POP) members to arrive at the scene. The training is expected to be completed by March 2022. This follows after protests that started due to former President Jacob Zuma being sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.
