The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) in Limpopo has taken the Provincial Department of Education to court after it terminated the rural allowance incentive from 01 January 2022. The Head of Department and accounting officer, Khathutshelo Dederen, stated that the compensation of employees had grown substantially in the past years and had led to the shortage of funds in the Department’s budget. Of the 48,468 permanent teachers in the province, only 6,057 received the incentive. The Department is opposing the application.
