SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – CHRISTIANA – ANNOUNCEMENT 19 JAN 2022 (07:00)

The Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality in the North West has ordered a precautionary evacuation order for residents of Bloemhof and Christiana who live near the banks of the Vaal Dam. The evacuation had been necessitated by opening two sluice gates at the Vaal Dam after flooding occurred following recent heavy rains. This follows after the Water and Sanitation Department decided to open the sluice of up to 150% water average. The Lekwa-Teemane Mayor, Sebang Motlhabi, has stated that measures have been put in place to assist the affected residents. The Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, has also stated that the municipality has engaged Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and the North West Provincial Government for a possibility of declaring the situation a disaster.
