President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 2,700 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members until March 2022 to assist the Police in maintaining order in the country. This follows after Ramaphosa had deployed 25,000 soldiers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal following the unrest in July 2021. The Presidency has stated that the extension of the deployment, from 18 December 2021 to 18 March 2022, has amounted to R233 million. Parliament has further stated that the deployment, in co-operation with the Police, is aimed to prevent and combat crime and preserve law and order within the country. The employment is in accordance with Section 201[a] of the Constitution of South Africa of 1996 and Section 18 of the Defence Act of 2002.
