Metrorail has implemented additional security measures after two attempts to steal electricity cables of trains in the Western Cape. This follows after all trains in the province had recently been halted due to the vandalism of cables during loadshedding. Trains between Cape Town and Muizenberg have been cancelled at the Retreat Station on Thursday evening, 10 March 2022, due to the vandalism of electricity cables. Western Cape Metrorail Acting Regional Manager Kaparo Molefi has stated that the attempted theft and vandalism of the electrical infrastructure indicate attempts to sabotage Metrorail services. Metrorail Spokesperson Nana Zenani has stated that Metrorail is engaging with Eskom and law enforcement to launch an investigation into the sabotage.
