The City of Cape Town has rejected power utility Eskom’s application to increase the electricity price, amid the rising costs of fuel, food and others. The public has been given until today, 14 February 2021, to submit their response to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) on Eskom tariffs. According to Nersa’s pro forma implementation plans, the tariffs may increase by more than 40%. Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, has further urged Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), André de Ruyter, to withdraw the application to increase the price of electricity. Meanwhile, Eskom is seeking an average tariff increase of 20.5% for the 2022/2023 financial year.
