Eskom’s Chief Nuclear Officer, Riedewaan Barkadien, has announced that two units at the Koeberg nuclear power station will be taken offline for maintenance from today, 17 January 2022, for a period of five months. Eskom has also applied for an electricity price increase of more than 20% for the 2022/2023 financial year, which starts in April. The Energy expert Chris Yelland has further stated that the planned outage, which removes 920 MegaWatts (MW) from the grid, will increase the risk of load shedding for 2022 and 2023.
