Constitutional and Legal Affairs Minister George Simbachawene has announced that the Government has initiated efforts to rejoin Tanzania to the African Court on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR). This follows after Tanzania withdrew its membership from the ACHPR due to various reasons. Simbachawene made the announcement during a joint meeting with officials from the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC). The Minister has further stated that Tanzania recognises and protects human rights and that the Government is set to continue collaboration with stakeholders in regard to human rights matters. Simbachawene has further called on human rights activists in the country to discuss human rights issues with the Ministry as part of efforts to improve and strengthen the Government’s response to human rights violations in Tanzania.
