United States (US) President Joe Biden has announced the extension of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe due to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s failure to implement the necessary political and economic reforms to warrant the termination of sanctions. Biden has stated that Government security services have routinely intimidated and repressed Zimbabwean citizens, opposition political parties, union members, and journalists throughout the preceding year. The US President has stated that the absence of progress on reforms needed to ensure the rule of law, democratic governance, and the protection of human rights continues to place Zimbabweans in a vulnerable state to ongoing repression and threatens peace and security in the region. Therefore, Biden has determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288, as amended, and maintain the sanctions in force.
