Incident Report: JJ De Villiers Farm, Senekal

On Tuesday, 7 April 2026, a shooting and arson attack occurred on a farm near Senekal in the Free State province, South Africa. The victim is JJ de Villiers, a 65-year-old farmer and figure in South Africa’s red meat industry (rooivleisbedryf). He released a public statement on 9 April 2026 confirming his identity and correcting media reports.

What Happened (per official SAPS statement and initial media reports)

  • De Villiers was working in his farm workshop when he noticed a white bakkie (pickup truck) driving past his property.
  • About 15 minutes later, he heard gunshots and saw the same vehicle speeding away.
  • Upon inspection, he found:

–     His dog had been shot and killed.

–     Tractor tyres had been shot and deflated.

–     Hay bales had been set alight.

  • De Villiers pursued the bakkie in his own vehicle. According to police and early media reports, he recognised the driver as a person he knew (initially described as his “business partner” from Bethlehem). During the chase, the suspect’s vehicle allegedly rammed his bakkie door three times. He was not injured in the collision itself.

Some Afrikaans media outlets (including Maroela Media/Nuusflits) reported this as linked to a prior dispute involving sheep that had been removed from the farm per a court order, plus alleged WhatsApp threats. These reports framed it as a “farm feud.”

Victim’s Clarification (JJ de Villiers’ Official Statement, 9 April 2026)

De Villiers strongly denies the media portrayal:

  • He is not a business partner of any of the alleged attackers.
  • There is no dispute between him and the suspects.
  • The motive for the attack is unknown to him; he will wait for the court process to reveal facts.

Additional details he provided:

  • His grandchildren were playing directly in the line of the gunshots but were unharmed (he thanks God for their safety).
  • He did sustain injuries during the incident and is still recovering from recent hip surgery.
  • To keep his focus on the red meat industry (where BKS / bek-en-klou-seer, i.e. foot-and-mouth disease, is a major challenge), all future enquiries will be handled exclusively by his legal representative, Ms Adele le Roux (tel: 011 485 1990).

He expressed gratitude to the SAPD Senekal for their rapid response and arrests.

Police Action and Arrests

  • On Wednesday, 8 April 2026, Senekal police arrested two male suspects (aged 19 and 56) at a smallholding in Bethlehem.
  • Four firearms were seized and will undergo ballistic testing.
  • The suspects are expected to appear in the Senekal Magistrates’ Court (reports indicate around 13 April 2026).
  • Charges reportedly include attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and animal cruelty.

Current Status

  • This is a very recent incident (only two days old at the time of de Villiers’ statement).
  • No fatalities occurred.
  • The grandchildren and (per police) the farmer himself were not reported injured in the initial SAPS release, but de Villiers clarified he sustained injuries.
  • The only public naming of the victim comes from his own statement; earlier police and media reports did not identify him by name.
  • No further updates on the investigation or court proceedings are available yet.
